RICK WADE AUSTRALIAN TOUR MIX & INTERVIEW *EXCLUSIVE*

RICK WADE was kind enough to make an exclusive mix for us at Wax Museum Records to share with you! He will be touring the country mid november so make sure you get out and catch him live. Also check the interview by Ms Phillippa Finkmeyer below!!

TOUR DATES:
Fri 12th @ Cuckoo Bar (Adelaide)
Sat 13th @ Croft Institute (Melbourne)

RICK WADE Interview
by Phillippa Finkemeyer

You have had a huge influence on the ‘Detroit’ and ‘Deep House’ sound, and you’ve been influence by it in return, what do you think separates you from other Detroit and Chicago artists?

I guess the one thing that comes to mind is I’m probably a bit more laid back than most other artists. I just enjoy listening to and making music. Don’t get me wrong. I have my opinion on certain things, but at the end of the day, I just want to have a good time with good people and good music.

For me personally, you were one of the first to really bring a hip hop aesthetic to house production - in terms of the loop-based, gritty sounding beats, but applied to deep house – alongside greats like Kenny Dope, Theo, Andres, Carl Craig. What is your position on sampling versus playing instruments, synths, and so on?

I don’t see anything wrong with sampling. I know I’ve been exposed to a lot of hot tunes that I would have never known existed if it weren’t for someones sample track. That said nowadays I don’t do as many sample tracks anymore simply because I think I’m better able to express myself or convey a specific thought or feeling by creating more original compositions.

There is a big boom of producers taking centre stage now – you could say partially due to the Internet and affordability of production tools. How do you feel about this new side to dance music?

I think it’s great. Anyone has the ability to be a producer now. I think the more hot tunes being released, all the better. The downside is, anyone has the ability to be a producer now and it does seem like there is a lot of crap coming out which kind of makes it hard to sift through and get to the good stuff.

Your involvement with DJ Godfather sits on a different side of the fence to your deep house productions. Are you still making ghetto tech/booty bass stuff or is the Rick Wade we know kicking on with the deeper vibes? Can we expect to hear more Big Daddy Rick?

Quiet as it’s kept, I’m still creating and releasing booty tracks. They’re just in a digital format as opposed to vinyl. You can check out my classic ghetto-tech and latest booty releases HERE

What are some of your bigger influences musically, outside of the house and modern dance music worlds?

I’m really into all sorts of music. Some that immediately come to mind are Charles Earland, Sven Libaek, Arthur Verocai, Nujabes, Madlib, The KPM library classics...too many to name my friend.

In our eyes vinyl will never die. How do you feel about the move to digital and the sheer number of ex-vinyl junkies now aligning themselves with Serato or CD formats?

Me personally, I'm straight-up vinyl, however, it doesn’t bother me a bit that some of the old school vinyl cats are switching to digital. I mean, I love vinyl, but I don’t lose sleep pondering the fate of the format or anything like that. I honestly think there will always be a place for vinyl with collectors and such, but I’m not sweatin’ it. That’s life. Things change, people change. You carve out a niche for yourself, roll with the flow and adapt or hang up your cape. Look, I’m sure back in the old days, cats that used to make and drive stage coaches were saying the same types of things when automobiles first came on the scene. Everybody from the horse breeder to the buggy whip maker was singing a song of gloom and doom, but that’s the way of the world. Time marches on whether you want it to or not. Just like back then, people will always need transportation, people will always need music. I’ll always be here to give ‘em the deepness.

The twin cities, Chicago and Detroit, are probably the most pivotal places in the history of modern dance music. Do you personally see these two places as one city only separated by a border- or are there vast differences and contrasts between the two?

There are differences in mixing styles and the types of classics a person grew up with, but as far as the people themselves go, a music lover is a music lover, a deep head is a deep head regardless of where they hail from.

EVIDENCE (DILATED PEOPLES) @ THE ESPY

Evidence made his name as a part of the legendary trio Dilated Peoples, alongside Rakaa Iriscience and DJ Babu. Starting with The Platform in 2000, the group released four well received albums that contained several hit singles, including the Kanye West assisted smash "This Way."

In 2007 Evidence released The Weatherman LP, one of the most commercially and critically successful underground rap albums of the year. A solo effort ripe with introspection that ran the gamut from all his haters to the tragic passing of his mother, it was the album his fans were waiting for. With a foundation of sample-based hip-hop classicism (something that remains important to Evidence today), his debut wove together towering bangers like "Mr. Slow Flow" and uplifting cuts like "Chase the Clouds Away."

He then released The Layover EP on Decon Records and The Layover Mixtapewith DJ Skee in 2008—showing marked improvement in his lyrical style—and he's been touring ever since.

EVIDENCE WILL BE COMING IN STORE (Melb & Adel) TO DO A SIGNING - MORE INFO TBA

Each artist will perform a full set in what promises to be a once in a lifetime chance to see two of Raps most gifted MC’s on the same stage..

RICK WADE AUSTRALIAN TOUR - NOVEMBER 2010

One of Detroit's best kept secrets, Rick Wade has been producing late night tracks and tapping into the essence of deepness since the '90's. Known for their universal appeal and appearing on over 20 different labels worldwide, soulful, timeless grooves
are his signature. Growing up in Buchanan MI, 1 hour outside of Chicago he was influenced by Chicago radio station WBMX and the Salsoul material and local stations that played the likes of Al Green and Isaac Hayes. Rick remembers:

"I've always been into the music first. I loved the way they (WBMX) would blend twosongs together and make it sound like one. I didn't even know what a DJ was back then. I just wanted to blend songs together...When I went to the record store those songs were only available on 12" vinyl, then I needed turntables to play them and then I needed a mixer if I wanted to blend them... At parties I had the records and I had the turntables so I became the DJ almost by default."

SOUNDS OF AL-MASHRIQ

The Sounds of VTech / Coleman: Sounds of Al-Mashriq (Middle East Mix)

Brand new mix from Coleman and the Mochilla crew. We'll have this in stock soon but here's the run down!

Sounds of Al-Mashriq: The Land Where the Sun Rises

Mochilla has brought you some beautiful mixes over the past twelve months: Hear the World, Addis to Axum, and the Verocai retrospective, Arranjos e Compisicoes. We value the idea of new old music, treasures that most likely haven’t found their way to your ears yet, and today’s mix is no different.

This past summer, Coleman and myself, along with Jay Electronica and his DJ, TJ the King, Ommar Offendum, and Will Quantic had the chance to go to the Middle East and play. We even made it to Egypt and linked with Kutmah there, but that’s a whole other story… This mix represents some of what we learnt. It’s a group effort, but Coleman made the whole thing seem magically coherent…

This is the liner note from the back of the cd:

The Mashriq (Arabic: مشرق, also transcribed as Mashreq, Mashrek) is the Arabic term referring to a large area in the Middle East that is bounded between the Mediterranean Sea and Iran. It is derived from the Arabic consonantal root sh-r-q (Ø´ ر Ù‚) and essentially means “east” — or more poetically, “place of sunrise.” It is therefore the companion term to Maghreb (مغرب), which simultaneously suggests “west” or “sunset,” and is a reference to the Arabic-speaking countries of North Africa.

Mochilla has had the opportunity to visit Lebanon and Jordan twice within the past year, as well as Egypt most recently. We were invited by our friends Nasser Kalaji and Laith Majali of Immortal Entertainment to play our music in Beirut and Amman, and to experience for ourselves how life is at this incredible cultural crossroads. To say that we have been astonished, amazed, shocked, gratified and humbled is to put things mildly. We have only begun to scratch the deep surface of this world, and yet so many things have been revealed already.

In honor of these visits and our growing cultural exchange, we are presenting a mix of some of the music that we collected, picked up, swapped and bought along the way. Coleman always delivers when it comes to these mixes and this is no different: from Jay-Z samples to the fidjeri vocal music of Bahraini pearl divers, this is a journey worth taking. Enjoy, open your ears and let the beauty and depth of the cradle of civilization wash away your preconceptions… -B+

ROC MARCIANO - MARCBERG

Another new joint dropping next week is the album by Roc Marciano 'Marcberg'. Touted by many as the hip-hop album of the year for 2010 so far.

It's entirely self produced by Roc himself. Some may remember him as being a member for a while of Busta Rhymes Flipmode Squad. Think minimal classic production style with some rugged street lyrics similar to Mobb Deep.

We've got the CD and vinyl sampler EP dropping! Check out a great little interview by Unkut.com's Robbie Ettelson here.

KRS-ONE - THE GOSPEL OF HIP-HOP: THE FIRST INSTRUMENT BOOK

Coming this week we've got a few copys of KRS-One's new book '
The Gospel of Hip Hop: The First Instrument' for the hip-hop purists/philosophers out there. It's 800+ pages!

The Gospel of Hip Hop: The First Instrument, the first book from the I Am Hip Hop imprint set for launch in Spring 2009, is the philosophical masterwork of KRS-One. Set in the format of the Christian Bible, this 600-plus-page opus is a life-guide manual for members of Hip Hop Kulture that combines classic philosophy with faith and practical knowledge for a fascinating, in-depth exploration of Hip Hop as a life path. Known as "The Teacha," KRS-One developed his unique outlook as a homeless teen in Brooklyn, New York, engaging his philosophy of self-creation to become one of the most respected emcees in Hip Hop history. Respected as Hip Hop's true steward, KRS-One painstakingly details the development of the culture and the ways in which we, as "Hiphoppas," can and should preserve its future.

The Teacha also discusses the origination of Hip Hop Kulture and relays specific instances in history wherein one can discover the same spirit and ideas that are at the core of Hip Hop's current manifestation. He explains Hip Hop down to the actual meaning and linguistic history of the words "hip" and "hop," and describes the ways in which Hiphoppas can change their current circumstances to create a future that incorporates Health, Love, Awareness, and Wealth (H-LAW).

Committed to fervently promoting self-reliance, dedicated study, peace, unity, and truth, The Teacha has drawn both criticism and worship from within and from outside of Hip Hop Kulture. In this beautifully written, inspiring book, KRS-One shines the light of truth, from his own empirical research over a 14-year period, into the fascinating world of Hip Hop.
